Help me give my students the full experience of STEM/STEAM. From programming the Echo Dot to changing their building stations and to use materials to create beyond their imaginations with Magna-Tiles.
On our first day of Kindergarten, I was both nervous and extremely excited. I am not sure I slept much awaiting the day to see all twenty-one of my students and curious about how they are going to feel about me.
Luckily, every student came with a smile and not one tear.
(Although, I did catch a few parents shedding some small tears.) The chatter and the excitement was contagious, and they were able to catch on so fast to our routine and curriculum. It was amazing to watch this special time when they will learn so much. One parent messaged me on the first night saying that her daughter said, "I think this gal can do the job!"
My Project
STEM, which is the educational focus in science, tech, engineering, and math, is being changed to STEAM, to include the arts. Students are given the opportunity to be creative, problem solve, develop math concepts, develop eye-hand coordination, develop fine motor (if the materials are small), and develop inquiry skills. These "I Can Build" mini-stations will allow my children in my class to experience a variety of STEAM activities. For example, they can choose a drawer containing a set of "I Can Build" cards. They will take the materials out and begin drafting, designing, and constructing from the material list.
They can use Playdoh, mini cups, and pipe cleaners to construct challenges listed on the cards.
Students can sort using the sorting trays and move the manipulatives with the kid tweezers. The possibilities are endless. Studies show that jobs in the STEM/STEAM field will double from 5-7% to 14% in the next few years. Since I teach Kindergarten, it is never too early for exposure in STEAM. The "A" for Arts was recently added, to help children become comfortable with science, tech, math, and engineering. It can become a catapult for the other STEM areas.
