STEM, which is the educational focus in science, tech, engineering, and math, is being changed to STEAM, to include the arts. Students are given the opportunity to be creative, problem solve, develop math concepts, develop eye-hand coordination, develop fine motor (if the materials are small), and develop inquiry skills. These "I Can Build" mini-stations will allow my children in my class to experience a variety of STEAM activities. For example, they can choose a drawer containing a set of "I Can Build" cards. They will take the materials out and begin drafting, designing, and constructing from the material list. They can use Playdoh, mini cups, and pipe cleaners to construct challenges listed on the cards. Students can sort using the sorting trays and move the manipulatives with the kid tweezers. The possibilities are endless. Studies show that jobs in the STEM/STEAM field will double from 5-7% to 14% in the next few years. Since I teach Kindergarten, it is never too early for exposure in STEAM. The "A" for Arts was recently added, to help children become comfortable with science, tech, math, and engineering. It can become a catapult for the other STEM areas.
