We are a large Title I Elementary school and we serve a PreK-5 population in which 64% of students get free or reduced breakfast and lunch. Some of our students also receive "backpack buddies", a food assistance program that sends food home each weekend. We currently have approximately 1,046 students and 17% of that is our EC population. Many of our students have reduced access to technology at home and are not afforded experiences to broaden their worldview.
My students need opportunities to learn about failure as a way to grow through fun, hands-on activities.
They are naturally curious but continue to struggle when they don't immediately get 'the right answer'. All of these students would benefit from a more play-based learning environment where they can get moving and make more decisions in their learning.
My Project
Students need to learn through using robots because it gives them experiences with what effect their instructions have off of the screen, on something in real life. Students will learn about giving and following directions, problem solving and teamwork.
Programming robots naturally lends itself to developing a growth mindset.
We will use a “test and learn” process; Plan, Test, Learn, Understand and repeat. This benefits students by allowing them to make mistakes in a safe environment and practice learning from those mistakes.
These life experiences, combined with lessons and information shared about careers in computer science, as well as all core subjects, will help students see that there is a world of possibilities beyond the town they call home. They will see that they are capable of doing big things.
