The scholars in my classroom are eager to collaborate and create projects to document their learning in the areas of math and science. With this new technology added to our classroom, their scholastic journey on the learning train will move full S.T.E.A.M. ahead.
My students are a combination of third and fourth graders who take their learning very seriously.
They seem to absorb new learning in the same manner that a sponge soaks up water. My students need 2 i-Pad Air tablets with keyboards, cases, and sound splitters. This grant would change their educational path. When their team created a short video illustrating their mathematical lesson of the day, it would be an informative assessment about the depth of their understanding. As they completed web quests and accessed websites researching scientific topics together, they'd develop teaming abilities that will ensure their future employability. My thirty two students attend a school serving a wide range of economic backgrounds. We also serve military families from the neighboring military base who choose not to attend school on base. In addition, we have an English language learner population who could further their understanding of new math and science concepts through the creation of presentations utilizing the vocabulary of each discipline.
My Project
One of the many challenges of running a combination class is providing engaging independent activities to be completed while the teacher is working with the other grade level. This technology will be used by students to complete a geometry focused web quest to design a house and yard utilizing their knowledge of multiplication, area, and perimeter. Working in teams, the students will keep digital science journals. Upon completion of our third grade science unit, they will use the evidence that they have gathered in our school butterfly gardens to construct an explanation about inheritance and the variation of traits. Students will work in cooperative groups to create short video explanations of math concepts to be posted on our classroom website to be referenced by both parents and fellow students. Through these and other activities, students will learn not only math, science, technology, and engineering curriculum but also ways to utilize critical thinking skills.
Integrating this technology into our STEAM classroom will offer my students daily opportunities to become problem-solvers, innovators, creators, and collaborators.
My goal is for these students to become part of our global society through the use of these tablets. I envision them seeking out careers as scientists, engineers, mathematicians, artists, and innovators because their experiences in third and fourth grade ignited a love for learning that lasts a lifetime.
