I absolutely love the energy and creativity that my ten and eleven year old students bring into our classroom every single day. They are full of passion, they love to learn, and they love coming to school. My students come to school from all backgrounds, all cultures, and from all family situations.
My students are energetic fifth graders.
We become a family throughout the year, supporting each other through the good times and challenges, and help each other to master the standards while still making learning fun.
My Project
I'm hoping for 29 copies of Wonder and the mentor text of We're All Wonders to help my fifth graders learn many character building lessons this fall. While all books teach fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary, this novel will also teach my young readers to embrace those around them. People are different and learning how to embrace and be tolerant of those differences is a skill that will go a long way in this world.
My goal is for each child to have their own copy of the book as we read and discuss the text together.
It's one thing to listen to the story as a read aloud, but when students have their own book to read, and have the option of rereading the chapters, it brings so much more engagement. Students love this story and I do too. In the past I've read this story aloud and they hang on to every word. It's an emotional book, but it's so rewarding as my students take on the challenge to choose kindness and to treat others with respect. Auggie's story and the lessons he teaches us about tolerance, is one that students will take with them long after the school year has ended.
