This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school in Washington DC where 100% of the students receive free and reduced price lunch. Moreover, 100% of the students in my classroom have learning disabilities. Unfortunately, this means that in an already resource short environment my kids often get the shortest end of the stick. Despite the difficulties my students face, they show resiliency beyond their years. Every single day they come to school ready to work fueled by the dream of a better future.
My Project
Despite being in the nation's capitol, my school community is constantly plagued by the devastating impact of budget cuts. This past school year, supplies were so limited that half of the days there was not soap in the school's restrooms. Not only is the unhygienic, but it is downright dangerous for students during flu season. It is my hope that teaching proper hygiene and providing proper supplies will cut down majorly on student illness. I can also build in life-skills and health lessons in the curriculum in order give my students the tools they will need to keep themselves healthy.
When students are safe and healthy, they are free to focus on the learning.
It is my hope that providing a safe and clean classroom environment, including tissue and cleaning supplies, will allow my students to safely learn and thrive!
