This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I am a Physical Therapist currently working in a high needs area of New York City in the public school system. A majority of the children in this population receive free breakfasts and lunches. Poverty issues are a way of life for most of the students.

My students are an exceptional group and I am dedicated to making sure they have every possible advantage when trying to reach their learning potential.

My students range in diagnoses from motor learning/processing disorders, Autism, learning disabled, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, emotionally disturbed and sensory processing difficulties.

My Project

My students need healthy snacks to stay on task and focused throughout the day. Often, my students complain of hunger and tiredness. My school is a low income-based school where most of the kids are coming from shelters or foster care. Many of my students do not eat breakfast, and waiting until lunch to eat is a long time for them. Having snacks in the therapy room is not only for fuel, but an incentive as well. My students look forward to having a snack and treat the snack like it is a reward. For example, once the students successfully finish their exercises and work, we break for a snack. The students are motivated to get their work done and receive a snack. I want my students to feel energized and eager to learn each day!
