Help me give my students snacks to keep their bellies full and minds active. We encounter so many students who come to school mainly to get breakfast and lunch. Having snacks in the classroom helps them focus.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Hunger is a serious issue that affects many children in the United States. It can have a significant impact on a child's ability to learn and succeed in school. When children don't have enough to eat, it can make it difficult for them to focus and concentrate in the classroom. A survey conducted before the pandemic found that nearly 60% of children from low-income communities came to school hungry, and many of them admitted that it made school difficult for them. Teachers have also observed the negative effects of hunger on their students, including decreased concentration, academic performance, and behavioral issues.
Hunger not only affects a child's ability to learn, but it can also have long-term consequences on their cognitive development.
Good nutrition is critical for brain development, and when children don't have access to nutritious meals, it can hinder their learning and cognitive abilities. Studies have shown that children who regularly experience hunger have poor learning outcomes and struggle with concentration, memory, mood, and motor skills. This can have a lasting impact on their academic performance and future achievements.
Hunger affects children from all backgrounds, but it disproportionately affects Black, brown, and Native People, as well as rural and immigrant families. We need to come together and support initiatives that help ensure children have access to healthy meals, both during the school year and beyond.
My goal is to make sure that my students have full bellies and are ready to learn. Most of my students are from single-parent households who work multiple jobs just to get by. Our students find comfort and consistency at school. By addressing the issue of hunger, we can help children reach their full potential and create a brighter future for all.
