Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a first grade bilingual class, in a Title I school. The students that I work with usually come from large families and low-income homes. Despite their financial or family circumstances, my students come to the classroom every day eager to learn. They are curious about everything! They love to ask questions and participate in all the activities that I prepare for them. During Math and Science time, they love to move around the classroom and work in small groups completing Math activities. They get excited just by playing simple games such as measuring a friend with crayons, or trying to beat the timer to solve their addition problems. They love activities that allow them to move and "play" as they learn! This year, our district is encouraging teachers to provide the students with hands-on activities that promote critical thinking, independence, and discussion among the students. The district also want us to provide students with books that support Math and Science topics. This idea is wonderful. However, it is difficult to find already made products in Spanish and enough Math and Science books in Spanish as well.
My Project
As many of my Bilingual colleagues, I have created many activities for Math and Science in Spanish, and there are few others that I have purchased, from Teachers Paid By Teachers. There are some books from A to Z that could be useful too. In order to print the materials, I will need supplies such as card stock paper, laminating film, staplers and other supplies to complete this project.
Please, help me to provide my students with wonderful ways to challenge their minds and in new and engaging ways.
Creating hands-on activities provide students the opportunity to actively engage in their learning. STEM is important because it's present in every aspect of our lives. STEM is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and students should be able to learn about it to excel in life. STEM helps in shaping future scientist, Engineers, doctors, pilots, teachers, etc. STEMS is all around us!!
