Fuel Up for Kindergarten Fun 2!

Help me give my students healthy snack foods such as breakfast bars, animal crackers, popcorn and pretzels to help them be at their best for learning and play.

My Students

Kids just want to have fun! Kindergarten students don't want worksheets and flashcards, they want their learning experiences to be fun and engaging at their developmental level. With the push of more difficult curriculum and learning standards in kindergarten, I am determined to keep our learning fun and active!

My students come to school with very diverse needs in their school readiness skills.

Some can't identify a number or a letter of the alphabet, while some begin kindergarten with the experience of preschool and are ready to explore the curriculum at a deeper level. I have 25 students who are five and six years old in a full-day kindergarten classroom. Our school is considered high poverty due to our large percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.

My Project

Ask a kindergarten student what their favorite part of the school day is and you will overwhelmingly hear responses of "Recess and Snack! Can you blame them, who doesn't love some great outdoor time and down time to refuel our bodies with our friends in the classroom? What we noticed in our classroom this year was that our snacks did not always provide our bodies with the protein and nutrients we needed to finish up our day of learning!

I am hopeful that through this project, I can provide my students with the fuel their bodies need to be productive and happy students.

It is a huge adjustment into a full day of school for our young learners- schedules to follow, routines to learn, and a whole seven hours away from home! What I hear from them is... "When can we eat?", "I'm hungry", "We are eating saltines - again?". As the teacher what I see is... students who didn't have any breakfast before school, children who are having a hard time managing their behavior because they are hungry, and some families who don't have the means to provide healthy snacks for our classroom.

Having a healthy snack every morning will help ensure that my students are off to a good start and can be the best listener and learner they can. This will have a positive impact on our learning for the entire day.
