Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a small, agricultural-based community. Over eighty percent of the students at our school are English learners from low-income households. Although many of their hardworking parents were not able to attend college, they value education and do their best to support the academic growth of their children.
My goal is to help students gain a love of reading.
Because over eighty percent of our students are learning English as a second language, I ensure that my lessons are rich in vocabulary. I base my lessons on meaningful, language-rich, award-winning literature. While I use novels to teach students reading, writing, and analytical skills, my end goal is to help my students become independent readers who read because they love it!
My Project
In my 12 years of teaching, I have found that one of the most important goals in education is inspiring students to become readers... for the joy of reading! Exposing students to a variety of language-rich novels, and having deep analytical conversations about them not only promotes the love of reading but also brings endless opportunities for lessons on literacy skills.
I use award-winning novels like "Wonder" and "Walk Two Moons" to spark a love of reading while teaching essential reading, writing, and analytical skills.
I enjoy creating literature units that give my students the opportunity to explore different genres, authors, and characters. I use books to teach vocabulary, important life lessons, and speaking skills. Through novels that they would otherwise not read on their own, students learn about other cultures and analyze the writing styles of different authors.
My goal is for students to see the endless possibilities found in the world of a good chapter book. I want to encourage them to move on from picture books and jump into the world of literary novels. Because our school library has limited class sets of novels (which are shared by all of our grade levels), I am looking to purchase these sets to use with our fourth and fifth-grade students.
