Help me give my students these healthy snacks to teach them about nutritious eating and fuel their minds for more eloquent writing and more analytical reading.
My students are eager, curious, enthusiastic learners. They take the skills I show them during the minilesson and unleash their creativity to create fascinating new viewpoints and eloquent essays. They bound into the classroom each day bubbling over with stories, questions, and opinions about how things in their world should be more fair and equitable. They embody the school district's value of social justice education that is student centered.
One of my students is so ambitious and unique, he was the star of the school play, he's on the football team, and he keeps the whole classroom laughing each day all while maintaining straight A's.
This student and his colleagues are inspiring because they meet challenges with grit and sensitivity. They open their minds to the possibility that the perspectives that differ from their own are worth considering. They stay curious and eager to learn even after frustrating setbacks. They are truly remarkable young learners.
My Project
These healthy snacks will quell the hunger that often distracts students and makes them too cranky to focus. When kids walk into the classroom, they come straight to the teacher's desk where they know there will be a nutritious snack waiting. Once they have gotten a boost of energy, their hands go up for questions, their writing gets longer and more complex, and the vibe in the classroom becomes happily cooperative.
Students are learning that when their body is hungry and their brain is low on fuel, healthy snacks like dried cranberries and mangoes are the best way to get back in the zone.
They often tell me that the snacks are a bright spot in their day at school, what they don't yet realize is that their brains are reacting to the nutrition by thinking in more complex ways not possible when hunger distracts them.
