Frustrated and Fidgety Students Find Fishing Fabulously Fun!

Help me give my students some great after school fishing memories with their teachers! These rods and reels will allow me to take up to fourteen students with us (we already have gear we are willing to share).

My Students

My students are freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school. They have all chose to come to this small charter school and have a better experience than they would have in the larger public school in the town they reside in. Each of my students are in special education or have some difficulty that gives them a significant disadvantage from their peers.

My students need to get outside!

They have been out of school for a long time. Most have been cooped up in their houses. Not only have they not been with their peers, many have not had the opportunity to do anything at all!

As a special education teacher in this school, I would like not only to welcome back all my students, but to give them the chance to make up for some time away from peers and away from fun, outdoor activities. I would like to take all my students fishing once per week after school.

My Project

During these trying times in our community (as well as the world), my goal for this project is simply to try and give my students a bit of normality when we return back to school-whether it be next month, or the start of next school year.

This fishing gear will provide my students with plenty of adventure and socializing with fellow classmates and teachers outside of the classroom.

Myself and at least two other teachers from my school have volunteered to take my students fishing after school on Tuesdays. We will do this as soon as we get back to school and continue this program every spring and fall.

I have already started a Google Classroom for this fishing club. I have started posting basic information such as the start of fishing season, fish identification charts, and equipment use. I have also invited students to join and to recommend other potentially interested students. I will continue to inform students on techniques, send how to videos, and invite students to share information or photos of their fishing experiences until we can fish together-socially!
