My elementary students from Sunset Park, Brooklyn, are thrilled to be part of The Disney Musicals in Schools Program again this year! This is only the third year that my school has had a theatre program, and the growth that I have already seen in the students' content knowledge, ability, and talent is rather mind blowing. We are currently in rehearsals for Frozen Kids, and our performances will be in the beginning of June. We have a cast and crew of sixty 3rd-5th graders.
The students come to each rehearsal with a sense of excitement, wonder, and expectation as they learn what is involved in the process of creating a show.
Because all of my students are English Language Learners, not only are they learning the elements of putting on a show, but they are also working on their understanding of new English words by reading, memorizing and performing the songs and scenes within the show.
My students continue to surprise and amaze me with their enthusiasm for this project. Their creative blocking, choreography, and production ideas make me very glad that theatre is made genius through collaboration.
My Project
These set, prop and costume pieces will make all the difference in our production of Frozen Kids this year. We will be creating the magical world of the two famous sisters from the story that our whole student body knows so well.
Our goal is to bring smiles to the faces of our students as they imagine what they can create within the world of our story.
We are purchasing many costumes that will make it easier to create the look of the Kingdom of Arendelle. We also are purchasing fake food items that will make it easy to show a lavish banquet hall for the Coronation. Our big musical numbers also will require numerous props such as white and blue streamers to symbolize "snow," summer inflatables, and unique balls to build a snowman. We are also planning to create Elsa's Snow Castle from foam board and snow that the Snow Chorus will build during the iconic song "Let it Go."
