This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach fifth grade in a Title One public school. This means that the majority of the students in our school live at or below the poverty level. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. While a lot of my students come from two-parent homes, many of them come from single parent homes. I also have students being raised by grandparents and other family members. Many of them come from homes without computers and very few books. Despite these obstacles, my students are bright, curious and eager to learn. They are proof that with the necessary materials and a positive learning environment, poverty doesn't have to be a deterrent to a good education.
My students love to use technology and when I use technology in class, engagement soars!
They love math and science, especially doing hands-on activities. As their confidence has grown this year, they are beginning to become more independent. They are really starting to understand how bright their futures can be with a little creativity and effort!
Next year, my class will have the great benefit of having a class set of iPads. I am doing my best to prepare for this wonderful transition of instruction. Many of our curriculum resources are web-based. There are also wonderful apps that can be used to provide differentiated instruction to my students with nearly immediate feedback from me as they are working. I cannot wait to dive in!
Since nearly all of my students have smartphones or some type of device, I know engagement in my classroom will soar with the use of iPads and Apple TV!
They will be able to learn in new and different ways, while still learning the same state standards. With Apple TV, students will be able to share their iPad work with others on the Smartboard. They will be able to see what other students are doing, as well as view exemplars of student work. This will promote collaboration in my classroom as we work together as a community to help each other improve. Your donation to this project will really help me transform instruction in my classroom.
