I teach in a Title One public school. Most of our students have never left the state of Georgia or the city they live in. Many of our students are being raised by grandparents, aunts and uncles or other relatives. They come from homes where there are few if any books. Most of my students are reading below grade level and this also impacts their progress in math, science and social studies. Even though they are reading below grade level, they still enjoy reading, being read to and reading stories they can relate to. My students need books where the main characters look and sound like them, someone they can identify with. Given the encouragement and the right resources, I know all my students can become great readers and successful students.
