When the drumming materials arrived, their faces absolutely lit up. Many of them couldn't believe the drums were really for them to use in class. One student even said, \"This is the coolest math class ever!\"\r\nWe've already put the drums and percussion tools to work in a unit on fractions and patterns. Students worked in small groups to create rhythms that represented different fraction combinations, then performed them for the class. Hearing and feeling how two 1/4 notes fit into a 1/2 note was a moment of true understanding for several students who had struggled with the concept on paper. In science, we explored sound waves by experimenting with different materials and observing how vibrations change pitch and volume.\r\nOne of my favorite moments so far was watching a very shy student volunteer to lead his group's rhythm pattern performance, something he had never done before. The drums have given him and others a way to shine and feel confident. Next, we're building on this excitement with a cross-curricular project combining music, math, and science to compose original \"math songs\" that explain scientific concepts. Students will write lyrics, create rhythms, and perform their pieces as a culminating project. \r\n\r\nYour contribution has not only provided materials but also inspired creativity, teamwork, and deeper understanding in my classroom.
