Students in my classroom are guided to master reading strategies to comprehend rigorous text, expected to effectively collaborate with fellow classmates, challenged to think critically and taught to communicate new understandings in a variety of ways, depending on their audience and purpose.
My students are an academically diverse group of adolescents from families who value education and make learning a priority.
Little time is needed to manage classroom behavior because students are respectful, love to learn and are intrinsically motivated. Students in the classroom enjoy reading fiction and non-fiction and are provided high-quality and engaging young-adult literature through the public school, supportive families, and a community that invests in education. It is truly rewarding to work with my students because they are life-long learners who ask thought-provoking questions that generate meaningful class discussions which naturally foster a dynamic learning environment. The classroom population includes ESL learners, gifted and talented students, and students who struggle with reading comprehension and require reading and writing intervention and support. While the needs of students vary, the critical access to meaningful instruction is provided to all class members.
My Project
By having access to HP Chrome books in the classroom, students will be able to practice skills and utilize technology that will prepare them for success as college students and in the workplace. Specifically, access to laptops in the classroom will make contemporary and competitive research activities a reality. Students research a wide variety of engaging topics that relate to the anchor texts of the curriculum, including using science and technology to alter brain functioning and the value of I.Q. tests as a measure to predict performance while reading the anchor text Flowers for Algernon. In addition, extensive research to build prior knowledge of the events, figures, and survivors of the Holocaust is vital to accessing the curriculum when students read texts that include The Book Thief and Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. In addition to conducting research, students will be able to create visual presentations and type word documents using the requested HP Chrome books.
Without a doubt, learning to utilize current technology to research and produce engaging presentations in the classroom can only help to prepare students to compete as successful citizens of their community and of the world.
While some students may have access to technology outside the classroom, they will not learn to use it for educational and professional goals unless it is readily available in the classroom and paired with meaningful direct instruction and more comprehensive purposes.
