This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I serve students at an alternative high school where many face challenges far beyond the classroom. The majority of our students are from minority backgrounds, and most come from low-income households. Many experience poverty, unstable housing, and in some cases, homelessness. These circumstances often mean that basic daily needs—such as deodorant, clean socks, underwear, and weather-appropriate clothing—are not guaranteed.

When students are worried about their hygiene or don’t have access to clean clothing, it impacts their self-esteem, attendance, and focus in class.

By providing a stash of hygiene supplies, comfortable clothing, growth-mindset stickers, and stress-relief items, we can help our students feel more confident, respected, and ready to learn. Meeting these basic needs is the first step toward improving attendance, boosting academic performance, and empowering students to believe in their own potential.
