From Regulation to Ready to Learn

My Project

My students are so much more than the challenges that may have brought them to a Behavior Focus classroom. They are funny, creative, resilient, and capable young people who deserve a classroom that recognizes their strengths while providing the support they need to be successful. For some of my students, simply making it through a full school day can require tremendous effort. Managing big emotions, frustration, sensory needs, and academic expectations at the same time can make learning difficult. I want our classroom to be a place where they know it is okay to need a moment to reset, where they have the tools to do so appropriately, and where one difficult moment does not determine the rest of their day.

Every resource in this project has been chosen with my students in mind.

Sensory and calming tools will give them healthy ways to regulate and refocus. Snacks because no one is happy when they are hungry! Organizational materials will help create the predictable structure and consistency that many of my students need, while everyday classroom resources will allow us to focus our energy on learning, building relationships, and developing independence.

I am starting this classroom with four walls and traditional desks, but I want to give my students so much more than that. I want to create a space that says, “You belong here. You are capable. Today can still be a good day.” With the right environment and resources, my students can practice skills that extend far beyond academics—self-regulation, perseverance, communication, independence, and confidence.
