Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a very low-income area in Springfield, MA. Our school is a Level 3 school in need of further resources regularly. I teach an abundance of ELL students who need very hands-on language experiences. All students receive free lunch and breakfast each day. Despite many hardships, students come eager to learn and grow each day. I would like to give them the tools they need to succeed every day. With such diverse backgrounds, the classroom is a place where all of my students can feel at home.

My Project

During reading block, my students work in station rotations. Part of that time is small group reading instruction. This year I have a variety of readers, from level K and all the way up to level Q! As a result I will need a variety of fiction and nonfiction books to keep them excited and engaged in their reading instruction with me each day.

I took time to select some of the most popular and engaging leveled texts for each of my leveled groups.

My readers will progress throughout the school year, so many of these leveled texts will be used repeatedly. The nonfiction books will be great for emphasizing text features, content-based vocabulary and real-world concepts. In addition, many of the books will allow my students to broaden their vocabulary, increase fluency, and model expression as they work to become stronger readers this school year.
