Help me give my students games, activities, and resources for phonics instruction as they learn English. Also please help me provide socks for my newcomer students to keep their feet dry and warm!
I teach about 35 students who are learning English as their second language. They come from all walks of life, but most are new to the United States, and many are underprivileged. It is very hard to come to a new country and a new school not knowing the language. There are so many changes at once. It can be overwhelming. Even with these circumstances, my students work hard to learn to listen, speak, read, and write English. I am very proud of them!
The two things my newcomers need the most are the opportunity to learn and someone to care.
Most of them need basic phonics instruction, regardless of their age. They have to learn our alphabet and sounds and how those sounds can come together to form words. We have a lot of rules in the English language, and they are not very consistent. I am asking for some hands-on phonics resources to help my students learn to read while keeping them engaged.
In addition, my students come to me with various needs. Some need coats, school supplies, food, or attention. One thing I have noticed is that my students consistently need socks. With this project, I am also asking for socks for all of my students that I can provide when needed. Socks keep their feet dry and warm and make a difference in their comfort level. Often their shoes do not fit exactly right so the socks can also be a barrier to blisters for shoes that are too small or can give some padding to shoes that are too big.
