Ms. Garcia from Washington DC is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need access to their first abroad Spanish experience through an enriching trip to Guatemala in 2012.

Have you ever imagined trying to conceive the vastness of the world without the opportunity to travel? For many of my students, this has been their reality for their entire lives. Their desire to see the world that they have studied is contagious.
I have worked with a cohort of students to raise funds for their first abroad experience to Guatemala in 2012.
Our students are inquisitive and driven young people who will cherish this travel opportunity for a lifetime. None of our cohort has been afforded the opportunity to travel abroad and only one student has traveled on a plane before. The financial realities of their families have made it difficult to receive fiscal support from parents to ensure this opportunity does not slip from their grasps. For the past 15 months, this cohort has planned talent shows, facilitated a Valentine's flower sale and other fundraisers to be able to meet their goal of travel to Guatemala. Unfortunately, our group fell short of our fundraising needs and were unable to attend in Summer 2011. They are more motivated than ever to travel this upcoming summer.
Your generous support will give each of our students an experience that they will never forget. During an 8 day excursion planned by the NETC company, students will have the opportunity to visit a rural Guatemalan school, Mayan ruins, Pacaya Volcano, explore through the Tikal National Park and also engage with local Guatemalans at the Chichicastenango Market in the quaint town of Antigua. I cannot stress enough how each of these experiences will expand their knowledge and pique their interest in a variety of content areas and will also allow them to ground their learning of the Spanish language in a specific cultural context. Students will be actively engaged in a learning process at each site and will foster an appreciation for another culture, its perspectives, traditions and its cherished sites.
This all inclusive experience will give students a renewed sense of belief that they can engage with the entire world and that the world is vast but within their grasp.
It will promote their cultural awareness and cross cultural understanding that will give them greater perspective as they embark upon their journeys towards adulthood and responsible citizenship in global society of the 21st century.
