From Junk Food to Healthy Snacks! Creating Healthy Kids!

My students need a variety of books that discuss the importance of life-long nutrition as well as kitchen appliances, like a blender and a mixer, that will allow them to make healthy snacks.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you tried tofu, kohlrabi, or sugar snap peas? My goal this year is to engage my students in the importance of health nutrition by providing them meaningful experiences that will allow them to create healthy snacks.

All students that would participate in this project are from a public elementary school in Wisconsin.

This particular school has a student population of over 700 students and is extremely diverse. My position in the school is a Bilingual Resource Teacher. I support roughly 70 students that are learning English. The specific group that would benefit from this project would be my 20-5th graders. All of these students are extremely intelligent, as most of them are nearly proficient in both English and Spanish. Each day they are provided literacy in both Spanish and English, science in English, and math in Spanish. It is quite amazing to watch them switch their brains to the language being instructed in. Most of the students come from struggling backgrounds where at times, they are the adults in the home. Often, their parents have less education than they do and are required to translate and become the voice for the family. They truly amaze me and what they have already accomplished!

My Project

I am requesting a variety of books that discuss the importance of life-long nutrition as well as kitchen appliances that will allow them to make healthy snacks. The electric mixer and blender would allow my students to work in small groups to create yummy and healthy snacks. They would be able to experiment with different ingredients and begin to understand the importance of obesity prevention. All of the supplementary reading material would enhance their understanding of how the body works when fueled with healthy food. Some of the resources are in English and Spanish which will benefit those that are still struggling to master English. Lastly, the nutrition bingo game would allow for continued learning...perhaps while they are munching on a fresh made snack!

This project is extremely important to me because childhood obesity is consistently on the rise.

I want all students to learn the proper ways to take care of themselves now and in the future. This project will allow them to gain more self confidence, develop a healthier body, and hopefully become more interested in promoting health education. Donations to this request will provide a lifelong impact for these students. You will be jump starting their path to a healthier self!
