Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

College acceptance rates are rising. Unfortunately so is the drop out rate for college freshman. The City University of New York cites insufficient math skills as one of the leading barriers to college success. These calculators will help prepare students for their college level courses.

My students are juniors and seniors at a public school.

They are energetic, excited, and have unceasing curiosity about the world. The outgoing class of seniors are going to colleges all over the world, from California to the United Kingdom. However, most of the students will stay in the City University system. This enables the alumni to remain extremely active and foster a culture of success and becoming a life long learner. The school is a small high school, of about 450 students. We are a young school of 8 years, with a theme of urban planning and environmental responsibility. My students hail from all over the Caribbean. They are 65% Hispanic and 35% black (West Indians and African Americans) and a large percentage of them are still learning English. This mixture of cultures enriches all of our lives as we are all constantly learning and celebrating each others culture with arts shows, dance exhibitions, and theatrical performances.

My Project

The Ti-83 plus Graphing Calculators that we are requesting will greatly enrich our learning experience. The graphing calculator is the standard calculator required in college courses, however few universities take time to teach students to maximize its potential. These calculators will allow us to explore topics such as finding limits, analyzing binomial distributions, and creating visual representations of data that we collect. The calculator will decrease the amount of time we spend tediously drawing charts, and increase the amount of time we can spend analyzing and understanding their meaning.

A college degree is becoming increasingly important.

As more and more students graduate college they are reducing the significance of the high school diploma. In order for my students to become competitive and productive members of society, they must complete their college studies. Our data indicates remedial and introductory math courses are a major barrier to our college bound students. These calculators will help us bridge the gap between the high school and college math courses.
