Help me give my students the chance to communicate! We will be printing communication books and communication boards tailored toward the communication skills and interests of each student. Once laminated, students can take their messages anywhere!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine if what you wanted was right across the room, but you just didn't have a way to ask for it. Imagine if people spoke to you, but you couldn't make sense of what they were saying. My students are in the early stages of learning to communicate. Some use gestures, or sounds to get their message across. Others get frustrated when they can't get what they want or need because they simply don't have a way of letting others know. These students are being introduced to picture based communication to help them to understand what is said to them, and to help them communicate with others.
My Project
These students, some nonverbal and some minimally verbal, are developing basic communication skills, like asking for help, asking for snack, saying "no", and responding to others. Using the printer and laminator we can make the messages they need, then teach them how to use them.
Symbols are easily understood pictures, which these students can use with teachers, with peers, and throughout the school to share their needs and ideas when their words don't work.
But making picture symbols, communication books, and communication boards takes a lot of printing and laminating. Its a lot of work, but when these students can communicate, its all worth it.
