This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Each student I've had this year has brought their own personality, background, and perspective to the classroom. Many students face challenges both inside and outside the classroom. Witnessing their resilience and determination to overcome these obstacles has truly been inspiring.
Our students live in a food desert, which means there are not many healthy food options in their neighborhoods; what better way to eat healthy than to grow your own fruits and vegetables?
There are 11 fast food restaurants and 1 grocery store around our school. The requested materials will help us enlarge the small garden we have already started.
Growing vegetables in a school garden offers an excellent opportunity to teach students about the importance of healthy eating and nutrition. They can learn about the nutritional value of different fruits and vegetables, as well as the benefits of adding fresh produce into their diets. School gardens can serve as centers for community engagement and outreach. They provide opportunities for collaboration with parents, volunteers, local businesses, and community organizations.
