From Dick & Jane to Mo Willems: Books to Engage & Move ELLs

My Students

In the wise words of William Butler Yeats, "Education is not filling a bucket, but lighting a fire." I need your help to light that fire for my students! For my students, 80% plus of whom live in poverty, the classroom is typically the only place they are provided the resources for academic success!

Many of my learners come from immigrant families.

Over 50% are learning English and speak another language at home. Their families work very hard to "make it" and have little time or resources to provide quality literature at home. Many of our parents speak little English and cannot read to their children in English. Unfortunately, foreign language books are also in short supply and quite expensive, when parents are able to read in their native language. My students are first, second, and third graders. They work very hard at learning English, reading, writing, math, and science. But the odds are against some of them. Some did not attend preschool and are struggling readers and writers. It is a challenge to find books that engage third graders who are not yet reading at a 2nd grade level. Most of the immigrant families are from Mexico or other Central American countries, especially El Salvador. We also have families from Southeast Asia, especially Vietnam, and from Africa.

My Project

I focused on a few beloved authors and book series so that my young readers can be independent in choosing books once I get them started on a series. (That is how you light a fire and keep it going!) I have included the most popular titles by Mo Willems. I have also chosen books by Eve Bunting, a wonderful author who includes history in her book theme, and professional books that will allow me to teach my students better.

These children are the future.

They are smart, compassionate, and hard-working. They need our help to succeed. I know if they are given a chance they will make the world a better place. Your giving shows them that the world cares about them and will truly make a difference in their lives.
