Many of my learners come from immigrant families and are still acquiring the English language. Over 50% are learning English and speak another language at home. Their families work very hard to "make it" and have little time or resources to provide quality literature at home. Many of our parents speak little English and cannot read to their children in English. My students are primarily third, fourth and fifth graders, but as a K-5 literacy specialist, I teach and support all kids. They work very hard at learning English, reading, writing, math and science. But the odds are against some of them. Some did not attend preschool and are struggling readers and writers. It is a challenge to find books that engage third graders who are not quite reading at a 2nd grade level.
