From Cyto to Skelto; Help Me to Learn About My Body!
My students need alternative methods to learn cell division, body systems and how the body works, including a skeleton, CD-roms and books will accomplish that goal.
Students make decisions affecting their health & well-being every day. These decisions lead to habits that stay with them throughout life. Learning about cell division, body systems & organs can help students make better decisions about their health & how their bodies work for life-long well-being
My students attend a small town school but have a big city heart about learning.
There are more than 65% of our students on the free & reduced lunch program. Many of the students eat their 2 meals a day at school & do not eat again until the next day. Due to the economy many of their parents are out of work. Within the last 10-15 years 3 major employers in the town have gone out of business & left 100's without jobs. The students work hard & thrive on new learning experiences even though their home life might have a negative impact on them. Technology & anything interactive is like offering candy to them; everyone wants some. Every student wants to be involved when we go to the lab & use the smartboard; everyone wants to have their turn at answering on the smartboard or using Gizmos (interactive website that a grant from Arkansas paid for last year, but we have been unable to afford this year) or any type of interactive activity. They are great & I want to give them the best.
My Project
Students will be able to see detailed images of cell division & division in action, images of the systems, learn how each system interacts with other body systems, & reinforce knowledge gained by reading about each system. The Arkansas Frameworks concerning the human body systems includes each of these. It is my intention to use the software as an interactive learning activity along with a research project that students do on the systems. The images will also help the students to construct a better model to go along with their research project. The skeleton will be used to teach the students about the bones & their names, muscle attachments, joints, how bones protect the organs within the body systems & the importance of the skeletal system. The books will provide the students with a project resource or reading source other than a textbook. These resources will change my student's lives by providing them with activities that will it more exciting, up-to-date & improve their lives.
My project is important because this is such an important skill for my students to learn.
It is important because knowing about cells & the human body & how it works can be life altering & life extending. The more we know & understand about how our body works the better prepared we are to maintain good health & the better quality of life we will have. The knowledge gained from this project will impact students for the rest of their lives; so the impact is tremendous! It meets frameworks too.
