My students attend a small town school but have a big city heart about learning. There are more than 65% of our students on the free & reduced lunch program. Many of the students eat their 2 meals a day at school & do not eat again until the next day. Due to the economy many of their parents are out of work. Within the last 10-15 years 3 major employers in the town have gone out of business & left 100's without jobs. The students work hard & thrive on new learning experiences even though their home life might have a negative impact on them. Technology & anything interactive is like offering candy to them; everyone wants some. Every student wants to be involved when we go to the lab & use the smartboard; everyone wants to have their turn at answering on the smartboard or using Gizmos (interactive website that a grant from Arkansas paid for last year, but we have been unable to afford this year) or any type of interactive activity. They are great & I want to give them the best.
