From Blocks to Buildings: Mathematics of Geometric Shapes

My students need concrete manipulatives, such as blocks and vehicle sets, to help them learn about abstract numbers.

My Students

While most Kindergarten classrooms these days are getting rid of their play centers and their blocks, we are encouraging our students to develop and nurture that special part of who a 5 year old is. A young child still needs to use concrete objects, such as blocks, to count and understand math.

I teach all day Kindergarten to non-English speaking children who are just learning how to understand our language.

Many of these kids have not had the opportunity of formal schooling or preschool. My kids try hard (but don't get help from home) and they are starting with the very basics in all subjects. In order for our children to reach the national average, we have to work twice as hard because they come to us extremely low at the beginning of Kindergarten. Our school is in an impoverished area and the students are not provided with much at home, so as teachers we have to provide our student with all of the extras beyond the paper and pencil activities. Before we can hand them paper and pencils, we need to teach them how to count by holding real objects; how to build high and low; narrow and wide; measure items using non-standard units of measurement; while all along teaching them about geometric shapes and how life affects them from a mathematical standpoint every day.

My Project

"From Blocks to Buildings: Mathematics of Geometric Shapes" will enhance our math program for our children. These blocks and accessories will be available for the children during the day for free choice and they will be actively used during our math program. We have a program balanced between developmental needs and academics, which gives our students the added time they need at this age to use concrete manipulatives, such as blocks, to work on math skills. These block resources may be used in large group, small group or individual group settings to cover many of the math strands our textbook covers. Since geometric shapes are a difficult concept for children to understand, working with the blocks each day will help them understand how each shape functions. Non-English students need to physically build to see what tall means and how by adding blocks (counting along the way) on top of each other you can add height, but the force of gravity is also a topic to be discovered.

Help my students become more than just textbook mathematicians that just know how to write their numbers, add and subtract.

Help them see the purpose in learning math, by giving them the types of manipulatives that are engaging and purposeful. Help them think like a future architect that needs to build a building. Before construction takes place; measuring, counting, adding, drawing, imagining must occur first. We all had a start in Kinder and I just want to make sure my kids have the best!
