From 2D to 3D: A STEM Makerspace Project

My students need a 3D printer to bring their creations to life in our STEM makerspace.

My Students

Grit. If you ask any one of my 5th graders what I hope they will learn this year, they will say just that: grit. They need the ability to persevere when challenged. I want my students to continue to try even after failing over and over and to embrace mistakes. These kids do that, and more, each and every day.

In our classroom, we don't let hard work stand in our way; we embrace it.

We know that making mistakes is part of our journey. These 90 fabulous 5th graders come from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds with each facing numerous challenges each day. Yet, somehow, they are able to leave everything else at the door and impress me every day.

I am so proud of these hard hardworking kids, and I can't wait to see what creations, discoveries, and inventions are in store in for their future.

My Project

Giving students the opportunity to engage in hands-on science projects is the best way to get them excited about science, technology, engineering and math. The possibilities for hands-on STEM activities with 3D printing technology in the classroom are endless. With the 3D printer from this project, students will be able to turn their 2D creations into 3D objects that they can hold in their hands.

By supporting this project, you will be helping our future engineers learn how to create in 3D using complex computer systems through STEM based activities.

This year, our 5th grade population is unique in that two-thirds of them are girls. Although our makerspace would serve all students, we find that this year we have an opportunity to help girls fall in love with the STEM careers which is a research-based need as few girls are entering these fields.

With a 3D printer in our STEM makerspace, students will be able to use CAD software to digitize and make their drawings into a 3D models for virtually any subject, thus enhancing their learning and understanding. Although the possibilities with 3D printing are endless, we will start by using 3D printing technology to solve STEM challenges which pose problems that are important to our students via creatively crafted challenges.

Thanks to this project, students will be learning through all 3 dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards and through STEM activities and will be inspired to pursue careers in engineering and environmental science. The purchase of a 3D printer will also help us with future STEM engineering projects and be a fantastic addition to our evolving makerspace.
