My Project

Our class needs two aquariums for our life science studies. First, our class will create a living ecosystem (a pond) by adding different organisms over the course of three weeks. Students will add producers or autotrophs and microscopic/macroscopic heterotrophs. Not only will students understand their roles in the ecosystem, but this project will also allow them to observe the organisms weekly to see growth, etc. We will also check water chemistry each week to monitor pH, nitrate levels, etc. We will eventually add plants, and finally African dwarf frogs, and monitor how each addition affects the ecosystem. While we have the living items donated already, we only have temporary aquariums for use during the three-week window. We do not have a system allowing us to keep these throughout the year. Our first aquarium will allow us to keep our frogs in a healthy environment throughout the school year rather than temporarily. This project also has a second phase in which students create mini ponds of their own (without frogs) and add small amounts of pollution while monitoring the effects. Examples include fertilizer to imitate run off into streams/water sources, coins to imitate metals, detergents, etc. This project allows students to learn a multitude of life science concepts with hands-on investigations.

Finally, we also plan to study the genetic variations in generations of glo-fish.

Again, we have a donation of fish, but we need a permanent place to house our fish throughout the school year.
