Friendship Matters: Social and Emotional Books for First Grade

Help me give my students books about friendship so we can build healthy, strong relationships in our class community.

My Project

At six and seven, first graders are still learning how to identify their emotions and learn how to respond to the emotions of others. Teachers are responsible for creating safe environments where students feel valued, respected, and a sense of belonging. A teacher also plays a role in helping students learn how to be a good friend to others and how to speak up for themselves. Academic learning is much easier to achieve when students are confident in their relationships with each other and the teacher.

Each of these books about friendship will be lessons for students to analyze and describe what a good friend is.

Students will practice role playing and create norms for our class about what it means to be a good friend. I know that the lessons taught through these highly engaging books, will last well past first grade to build socially confident and emotionally intelligent citizens of our community.
