This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a high needs population in a high need area. I have a 2nd grade inclusion classroom in the dual language program. My classroom serves 49 general education and special education students. In New York City we are required to teach mini-lessons to our students from a central meeting area. The theory behind this is that in this fashion, students are more attentive then if left seated at their desk during instruction. This is especially true of my special education students who benefit from visual and interactive lessons. Being close to the teacher, other students and teaching materials such as big books or the easel affords them the kind of personal attention they require in order to learn. My classroom did not have a rug and at the beginning of the school year I purchased a rug from Home Depot. However, it is not large enough to accommodate everyone. Often, some students have to sit on the floor or in a chair to participate in the group activity, which takes away from their enjoyment of being with the group. My students would love a classroom rug that was large enough to accommodate everyone so no one is left out. We are requesting a bilingual rug which would reflect the work that goes on in the classroom.
