My Students

My diverse, book loving 2nd grade students are from a rural town in West Tennessee. Our small school district has one elementary school with a student population of approximately 780 students. Our school population has about 75% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.

As part of our state initiative for reading, our classroom has students up and moving to work on tasks and activities that align to the standards but also have them working collaboratively with a partner or group.

We are working to transition our classroom from student desks to move a more comfortable, conducive environment for all learners.

Although my district provides me with $200 to get my classroom supplies, I do not have enough money to give my students what they need as far as the bigger, more expensive items like chairs and tables.

My Project

The flexible classroom, with stools, rug areas, and cozy corners for kids to concentrate, is cropping up more and more in schools. The effort to get rid of students sitting in hard desks all day is increasing and more classroom teachers are spending their own money to give their students a comfortable environment to learn.

Flexible seating allows students to choose their seats or move around the classroom more often to work with groups, partners or even on their own without being confined to a desk.

My students need a flexible classroom with carpet areas and flexible chairs. We are asking for two rugs, 5 flexible chairs, a printer to work on independent research and a laminator for saving projects.

I cannot afford to provide these for my students but I am hoping you will help me give them opportunities to work on challenging projects in the classroom while being comfortable.
