The culture of our school is tightly woven with cultural and ethnic diversity, and it is a beautiful place to be! The children have a desire to learn no matter---or, perhaps, because of---the circumstances from which they come.
Many students at my school have recently emigrated from other countries, some with only the clothes on their back.
Diversity is defined as the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization. "Diverse" is the word that best describes my school.
Our students come from over 30 different nations, and many of them have little or nothing when they arrive at our doors. Our families have a very high rate of poverty with over 75% living below the poverty line. We also have some of the highest taxed real estate in the city in our neighborhood, and, yes, the children who live in those houses also attend our school. Our motto is "From across the street and around the world," which truly describes us.
My Project
Puberty is beginning to hit and my classroom stinks! My students are an active group, and no doubt next year's class will be the same. They go out to run and play, soccer is a favorite at my school. When they come in from recess they are all sweaty and stinky. I know this, but so do they. Many of my students are from low income homes and some even live in shelters. Deodorant is expensive and is the last thing on the minds of their parents. This isn't their fault, and it makes them feel bad.
I often have "the talk" with them, about washing and using deodorant, but they don't always have this available at home.
I'd like to be able to offer them some to take home and use. They have enough to worry about, smelling clean and fresh shouldn't be on that list.
