In the spring of 2020, my incoming second graders were in their kindergarten year of school. As they were just becoming confident through the hallways of our elementary school, making friends, and starting to read their first books. Then schools closed abruptly. Their interactions with their teachers and classmates turned into meeting on zoom with tremendous help and support from their families at home. In our school district, most students continued to learn virtually all the way through school year 2020-2021.
This week those once kindergarteners will reenter our school building as second graders!
They will not only learn about place value, protecting the earth, and the joys of reading and writing this year. They will learn the importance of wearing a mask, washing their hands, and doing their part to keep everyone in our school community safe.
My Project
Safely returning to the classroom setting in the middle of the current surge of the highly contagious SARS-Cov-2 delta variant requires using a variety of interventions to reduce Covid-19 infection risk for students and staff, in addition to protecting the larger community.
While we have current intervention strategies in place, it does not include portable air purifiers in our classrooms.
During school year 20-21 they were provided in our classrooms. They were unfortunately and surprisingly removed by our school district over summer break. We need your help getting them back!
The use of portable air purifiers is a proven risk reduction strategy that involves reducing the concentration of infectious SARS-Cov-2 virus particles by filtering them out of classroom air. The use of portable classroom air filtration systems, along with existing central air filtration systems with MERV13 filters, will provide a robust system for removing viruses from the air in addition to improving airflow.
Thank you for giving to our project and helping keep kids and the adults who care for them safe!
