Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are great. They love learning and they enjoy coming to school. My students are mostly immigrants or children of immigrants. Many are English language learners (ELLs). Nearly all students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch because their family's household incomes are below the poverty line.
My school is a large, crowded school, in a very large urban district.
This past year, we have had a lot of budget cuts. Fourteen staff members from our school were cut. Most of our budget has been used to keep the teachers and staff that we do have. Even though the school has limited resources, students have some of the highest test scores in the area.
My Project
This fall, our school will be starting with remote learning. Many of my students do not have the supplies they need to learn at home. These learning kits will provide an opportunity for all students to be successful.
Each student will receive a hands-on learning to kit to make sure they can continue their learning at home this fall.
These kits will be placed in a plastic bags and delivered to student's homes. Kits will include art supplies such as markers, glue and construction paper. Students will learn about various French artists including Matisse, Monet, and Seurat. Then, they will use their art supplies to create their own art work in the style of these artisits. Students will also use the glue and scissors to make their own practice flashcards. The kits will also have a folder to help students organize their supplies at home.
Finally, students will receive some hands on cultural items related to their French learning including a French flag and French snack. Students will use the flag as a prop for singing a song about the French flag. The French snack will provide background knowledge and a real experience for students to begin their student of French food.
