We are a dedicated group of students at our school, a Title I school in the vibrant, diverse community of East San Jose. Our yearbook club, primarily comprised of marginalized and disenfranchised youth, seeks to document and celebrate the unique stories and achievements of all students, promoting an inclusive narrative that counters racial and cultural biases.
By upgrading our camera equipment to the Sony a9 III, we aim not only to enhance our sports coverage but also to enrich our curriculum with anti-racist pedagogy, empowering our students to create impactful Instagram posts, compass work for our advisory classes with anti-racist visions, and student-led videos that advocate for social justice, thereby providing a dynamic platform for them to challenge stereotypes and authentically express their diverse identities and cultures.
Capturing the dynamic essence of school sports requires not just passion but also the right tools—tools that transcend the limitations imposed by inadequate technology. Our current Canon EOS cameras, while functional, fall significantly short of what is needed to depict the fast-paced and often poorly lit environments of our sports events. Upgrading to the Sony a9 III, a camera renowned for its rapid autofocus and high-performance capabilities in low light, is essential. This upgrade will allow us to produce professional-quality images that reflect the diversity and dynamism of our student-athletes, providing a counter-narrative to the often one-dimensional portrayal of students from disenfranchised backgrounds.
