My Project

My students love reading high-interest, fast-paced novels in verse, so I've designed a unite called "Free Verse Free Read" where they get to read a novel in verse of their choice and complete various projects and participate in various discussion activities.

For this unit to be a success, I need to increase the number of free verse novels in our library, so students have a choice from a wide variety of topics and so they have access to the most recent, popular free verse novels.

During the unit, students will independently read for 20 minute a day. Then we'll do a discussion activity such as "Speed Dating," "Table Talk," or "Reading Conferences." In "Speed Dating," students sit in tables across from each other and have to share aspects of their books. In "Table Talk," students sit in groups and have to keep the discussion going for five minutes. If they get stuck, they can grab a topic card with a discussion prompt. For "Reading Conferences," students chat one-on-one with me about their book. In addition, students will record a weekly audio journal where they reflect on some prompts. As a final project, students will write a short-story in free verse form.

I can't wait to carry out this unit in my classroom. I know my students are going to love how different it is from anything else that they've done in English class. To engage the youth, us teacher have to think outside the box. Please help me give them this unique learning experience!
