Most of the books that I teach were originally written with a quill. Although the classics contain timeless themes, I find that students effortlessly flourish when a novel is written in an engaging, contemporary tone and when it is easy to relate to characters. When you couple relevant literature with competition, you have a recipe for success. The Battle of the Books is a highly-engaging, autonomously driven reading competition in which teams are given a collection of books--all teams have the same eight books and teams are provided with two copies of each. Students must read at least two books, but are encouraged to read as many as they can to increase their chances of winning. The Battle of the Books culminates in an academic-team style competition with a buzzer system, where students work with their teams to answer as many, correct questions about the books as they can.
