This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a community where they struggle to find themselves. Literature gives them a place to escape for a little while.

Our school is in an urban community of high poverty levels.

But that doesn't stop my students from being excited about learning. They just seem to eat up the stories we have been working on. I find that they especially love to listen to the story and follow along. Most of them are constantly asking questions about the text and wanting to know if there are more stories like the one they just read.

My Project

By having 35 copies of Freak the Mighty I will be able to have a book for every student. Since my classroom is an inclusive room I find having an audio of the book levels the playing field. Finally having the teachers guide by Novel Ties I will be able to create assignments that reach all their levels.

My students love of reading is something that makes me smile.

I need to provide a book that will engage and excite them and Freak the Mighty is just that book. They will learn life lessons from two unlikely characters and discover that disabilities are not to be feared but praised!
