Frankenstein--Books Needed for Classic Novel Study at Title One school
Help me give my students the highly relevant novel, Frankenstein. Our study includes contemporary links to bio-engineering and study of ethics. We do not have school funding to buy a class set of any novels.
I teach hard-working, creative students who are challenged by socio-economic backgrounds and are mainly second generation immigrants from Latin America and the Middle East. I love my student's courage.
Most students will be the first in their family to attend college.
Over 40% of my students are English Second Language students. My students seek a better life through education.
"I've never read a full book in English" one student told me. This is my sixth year teaching at this Title One school.
"Frankenstein" remains a highly relevant novel due to links with the ethics of science, child abandonment, and responsibility. Our school does not have funding to buy a class set of the novel. These Senior students need to read a classic novel to help prepare them for college and to enrich their thinking. Most students have never read a classic novel. We cover the life of Mary Shelley and feminist issues. We also analyze Rousseau in relation to the novel. We read articles on bio-ethics. We plot Maslow's hierarchy of needs for the creature. Students also write a creative story about a monster.
