Fostering Social-Emotional Learning through Performing Arts

My Students

Our elementary school is a new STEAM Magnet school. This is our fourth year of creating scientists, engineers, and artists, by engaging and facilitating our students as collaborative thinkers. Our school is designed to support and inspire confidence, creative thinkers, and well-balanced collaborators while becoming 21st-century learners.

Our driving force is a Project-Based Learning environment in which students are supported and free to take risks, learn from their mistakes, and work collaboratively.

Our school is driven by the implementation of 21st-century skills. With 21st century learners at the forefront, I want to create an environment that celebrates hands-on learning and collective problem solvers. My students are empowered by creating new things or old things in a new way. Students are given an opportunity to listen carefully to others and develop skills to articulate meaningfully to those around them.

We are fortunate enough to have students from all walks of life. We have homeless students, foster students, single-parent homes and dual-parent homes. Even the most balanced home setting can often go through tough times. Performing arts is a craft that has no judgment, no requirements, no expectations. It is solely an opportunity for expression.

My Project

Our school is a STEAM Magnet School. We have only been open for four years. We are fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to introduce a Jr. Broadway Musical for the first time since our school opened and need wireless microphones. Social-Emotional Learning is critical to our students and through performing arts we are able to create a vehicle that provides a safe, collaborative, creative zone in which students are willing to take risks. We will provide students an opportunity to use their imaginations, creativity, and vulnerability to foster a love for the arts. Life can be difficult at times and performing arts allows us to become a community and support system.
