My students need iPads to develop a sense of independence in their classroom lives.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students all have a diagnosis of autism and are placed in a self contained setting. Currently I have 3, 5th and 6th grade students and a para-professional in my room. The students in my classroom spend most of the school day in my room with the exception of 30 minutes of academic inclusion with their peers and our para-professional, computer lab, library, recess and lunch.
Our school is located in a low-income, high poverty area where 100% of our students in the parish receive free breakfast and lunch.
In our classroom, we have a wide range of learning abilities, learning styles, and personalities. Two of my students are verbal with functional communication skills, and one is nonverbal. Each student has their own preference of likes and dislikes, and the rate of demand for each is very different. As different as my students are the one thing they have in common, is that as their teacher, I want nothing more than to give them a sense of independence and instill in them a love for learning.
An I-Pad will help with individualizing instruction for all students. My ultimate goal is to have 1:1 ratio for students and I-Pads. With this project each of my students will be able to have their own I-Pad for independent and individualized work stations. This project will also allow my para-professional and me to each have one to more easily collect data on the go or have an I-Pad readily available when a new student comes in. My students are very dependent on adult input and this technology will allow them to work on a more independent level and at their own pace. We already have 2 I-Pads in our classroom and my students are always so excited when they get to use them! We use them for work stations to practice and review already mastered skills and also to introduce and develop new skills in a fun and interactive way. The students also love to compete against each other with the educational games thus developing much needed social skills. The students in my class are each assigned a color for all of their materials at the beginning of the year so the different colored cases will help the students see which I-Pad belongs to them along with protecting the I-Pads from any accidental damage.
The main goal for these I-Pads is to develop a sense of independence in the day-to-day school life of my students.
Developing independence is important for any child and even more so for students with special needs. By increasing independence we will also be improving self-esteem and self-confidence in their abilities.
