My student's have a diagnosis of autism and are placed in a self contained setting, located in a low-income, high poverty area where 100% of our students in the parish receive free breakfast and lunch.. Currently I have 3, 5th and 6th grade students and a para-professional in my room. The student's in my classroom spend most of the day in my room with the exception of 30 minute academic inclusion with their peers and our para-professional. In our classroom, we have a wide range level of learning abilities and personalities. Two of my students are verbal with functional communication skills, one is non-verbal. Each student has their own preference of likes and dislikes, and the rate of demand for each is very different. As different as my students are the one thing they have in common, is that as their teacher, I want nothing more than to give them a sense of independence and instill in them a love for learning.
