Fostering Flexibility

My Students

My fifth graders walk into the classroom each day yearning to learn and explore. They are at a point in their lives where they are trying to figure out who they are and who they want to be. As their teacher, I do my best to help them gain understanding of the world around them and bridge the gap between childhood and adolescence.

My students have all been labeled gifted in one or more academic areas, which brings a variety of different learning styles into one room.

These students have a hard time conforming to a "traditional" learning experience. I am always in search of the best strategies to keep them engaged in their learning. I have since learned, providing as many opportunities for independence and choice throughout the day is vital to helping them reach their full potential. My students love coming to school every day to share their knowledge with the world!

My Project

I am requesting new furniture for my classroom that provides students with the option of choosing the right tools to help them learn. In this case, it is where they sit throughout the day. Studies show when students have a choice in their learning their engagement increases. By allowing students to choose not only where they sit but also the type of seating will help them take control of their learning and teach them how to make smart choices independently.

The materials I have chosen will be accessible to all learners every day.

The floor seats and short round table will encourage students to collaborate on group projects or during partner work. Students who would prefer to work on the floor will enjoy using the lap desks and the balance balls can be moved to any location to help maintain students' focus. Students will be able to use these items all day every day.
