Maxfield Elementary has had an amazing experience with our emotional support dog, Bruno. Our school community and climate has benefited greatly. In the upcoming school year we are going to continue to grow students social emotional learning even more…with rescuing puppies!
Research has proven that puppies are a strong connection to social emotional growth and there is no better way to connect them than in a third grade classroom.
Students will learn responsibility, regulation strategies, fluency reading skills, unconditional love and that’s only the beginning. Foster puppies are in need of loving homes and we will help give them that until they find there forever. Students will incorporate their experience into their academic learning through all subject areas and learn about responsibility all in a days work. Puppy fluency reading will be a part of our daily practice, writing while reading our stories out loud as a part of the editing phase and using real world math problems that incorporate the pups that come into our community. Warms my heart to think about teaching and learning while developing social emotional skills and saving puppies all at the same time.
Our classroom will work hard on rituals and routines and when ready we’ll gradually incorporate a puppy into our community. As the puppies get adopted we will continue to grow our community with another and possibly more than one at a time. Our list incorporates multiples along with different sizes because we will not know until they reach our classroom. We will be working with very young pups who are learning their classroom manners, so we will need to be prepared for accidents and items that will help develop responsibility skills for students on how to clean up and take care of supplies.
